Omron wins Electron d’Or Award for connector miniaturisation breakthrough

Omron Electronic Components Europe was recently presented with the prestigious Electron d’Or prize, awarded by ElectroniqueS, the top French electronics technology magazine, for advances in connector manufacturing technology leading to the miniaturisation of its FPC connector family.

The award was based on the introduction by Omron of mass production of subminiature connector contacts electroformed through an electroplating process, the first of its kind in the world at the time of its launch in July 2011. Connector terminals are usually formed by a pressing process, which has a number of limitations. Omron has addressed these by upgrading its microfabrication technology and electroformed materials technology to enables mass production of connectors using subminiature contacts that were impossible to form through conventional press technology.    Commenting, Mark Jones, COO of Omron Electronic Components Europe, said, “The Electron d’Or is the ‘Golden Globe’ of our industry.
